Compilations: "50 Aniversario Del Triunfo de La Revolucion" 2 CD's 2010

"50 Aniversario Triunfo de La Revolucion"
Compilations: 50 songs. The Tumbao label
A 2 CD digipak.

The music label 'Tumbao' based in Spain is well known for it's
effort for over more than 15 years, for aquiring, remastering,
reissuing and therefore preserving many varied forms of
secular and non secular Cuban music, as well as the many
historically important artists/musicians/bands/orchestras.

The "Tumbao Cuban Classics" series with consistently
creative and artistic graphic design work has provided
music to listeners who may otherwise would never have
had a chance to hear classic Cuban music, unless they had
been collecting it for years or knew someone who had it.

We must of course acknowledge 'René Lopéz Sr.' and
'Andy Kaufman' for being among the first to reissue "Cuban Classics originally from 78rpm's onto vinyl LP's in the mid 1970's on the 'Cariño' and 'Cubitas' record labels respectively.

Many people I know have heard and have some of these 50 recordings, but many more have no idea that these recordings exist.
Tumbao took their time in searching for and compiling the materiel on these two CD's titled "50 Aniversario Del Triunfo de La Revolucion".

Whether listeners relate to the "ideology" presented is up to
the listener, but without a doubt... the musicians, bands, orquestas that are playing the music on these 50 recordings are superb.
Alejandro 'El Negro' Vivar, Ibrahim Ferrer, Pio Leiva
Orq. Chepin, Carlos Embale, Daniel Santos,
Rolando La' Serie and yes....... Celia Cruz.

LP cover art: Humberto Cané "Yeyo y Cané" RCA Victor 1955

"Yeyo y Cané"
Humberto Cané
10" inch vinyl LP RCA Victor Mexico 1955
Humberto Cané:
born, Matanzas, Cuba 1918.
died age 82, Los Angeles, Calif. 2000.

Multi-instrumentalist and band leader Humberto Cané organized one of the most highly regarded bands in the musical history of Mexico, specifically in the genres of Mambo and Cha Cha. In 1947 Cane's group backed Benny More in the recording of a now famous 10-inch LP at the outset of the popularization of Cha-Cha-Chá and Mambo. Previously recording with Conjunto Matamoros, it is thought that his collaborations with 'El Barbaro del Ritmo' had helped spawn his particular soneo style.
Humberto Cané was the son of Valentin Cané, the founder of the group Sonora Matancera.

Profiles in greatness: Agustín Gutiérrez (selected bongó solos)

1925
Agustín Gutiérrez
a.k.a. "Manana"
(pictured with Abelardo Barroso playing Clavé)
Born: La Habana 1900 - died: ?

It's often thought that Agustín Gutiérrez created
the "Cuban" rhythmic form called the "Martillo"
which is the basic pattern played on the bongoes.

Agustín Gutiérrez was a member of the Abakúa in
La Habana and is often thought to be one of the first
bongoceros to introduce the technique of using the
thumb and middle finger to produce a glissando effect
by running the finger across the skin, producing a
low pitched "braying" or "mooing" sound, which in
actuality was derived from the highly secretive
Ékue drum which plays a major role in Abakúa
rites, never leaves the Fambá (temple) and is rarely
ever heard
by non Abakúa societal members.
The sound is meant to replicate the call of a Leopard.
(originally rooted in the Calabar region of Nigeria)

Candido Requena... and the other drummer on the right is
playing my absolute favorite Quinto for the last 45 years.
I'd kill for a drum that exact shape and size.
