"Queens of Havana: The Amazing Adventures of Anacaona,
Cuba's Legendary All-Girl Dance Band"

Fabulous book! A great accounting by Alicia Castro of the Castro Sisters band: Anacaona. From the 1920's through the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's and beyond. With great insight into Chinese Cuban musicians in Havana. And El Barrio Chino en La Habana. 393 pages....with MANY excellent photos! An absolute bargain at $1.10!
The book includes a CD with the band as a Septeto playing 5 songs:
The often elusive concept/s and function of "Cuban" Quinto thoroughly explained, including profiles of several of the most prolific players past and present and their contributions. Includes rhythmic notations.
Since I started this music blog several years ago, I have received several very nice emails from people I never thought I would have communication with.
I received a nice email from 'Johnny Aguiló' in Miami, the son of 'Rolando Aguiló'.
I received a very nice email from 'Elsie Castañeda', the daughter of 'Leo Castañeda' who is in his 80's and living in Miami.
I received a very nice email from 'Maritza Prado Borcela' The niece of 'Amado Borcelá' "Guapacha".
I also received a very nice email from 'Amara Pérez', the granddaughter of 'Lou Pérez'.
And an email from 'Heidi', her late Father played in Conjunto Saratoga.
And the latest was received from the daughter of Mariano Merceron, Juana Merceron who lives in California.
And amazingly and unexpectedly, I received a very warm and cordial email sent from Cuba, from El Maestro 'Abdón Senén Suárez Hernández', his daughter and her husband saw this web blog on the internet, told him about it, after he viewed it, he sent me the following email:

I have a beautiful "linen" guayabera I bought in Cuba...
a few skinny 1950's bowties I bought on Ebay.... and I just bought a pair of White 'Buckskin' shoes last week, all I need now are those pants, that color, slightly tapered at the ankle... and I'm good! ;-)>
I can't say enough about this book, other than "superb". This is "one of" the best, in depth, authoritative works written in English on the subject of the Abakuá Society in Cuba. (other than the works of Dr. Ivor Miller and works in Spanish by 'Fernando Ortiz' and 'Lydia Cabrera') In hardcover, 286 pages, beautiful color photos, black and white photos, maps totaling 123.The size of the book is 10.4 x 7.1 x 1.1 inches and weighs 1.7 pounds. When this book came out it sold for $45.00... it's available on Amazon.com for under $9.00I bought my "Hardcover" 1st printing copy last summer at a bookstore here in Manhattan for $7.85! (there are actually things in this book that are generally considered not to be revealed)

This is the "Cancionero Rumbero", put together by 'Barry Cox', the N.Y.C. based singer and web master of the Cuban Rumba blog: esquinarumbera.blogspot.com These are the lyrics meticulously translated into Spanish from 175 of the most historically important songs within the Afro-Cuban 'Guaguancó', 'Rumba Columbia', Yambú and Abakúa music of Cuba.
Before this, there did not exist "in this detailed form" anything like it.
The download is the complete "Cancionero Rumbero", 42 pages in a .PDF file.
Cuban LP's and recordings which include particular "styles" and "forms" of (playing & singing) "Cuban" music that unfortunately have become, or are on their way to becoming lost art forms. As well as related materiel which may not be "directly" from Cuba.
Mostly LP's that are either long out of print and-or obscure and music from "my own personal collection".
Occasionally some Brasilian things will be added that are hard to find, even on the other great Brasilian blogs, many that are listed in my Blog links. And maybe some things that have nothing to do with Cuban or Brasilian music.
It takes time to do all this, scanning the covers, resizing and uploading, often changing & correcting the info.
Have fun! "The water most often tastes freshest at its source"
