He had been in failing health for the last several years, living in a home for the infirm.
An "important, influencial and much respected singer, composer, rumbero"... much loved by many of us here in New York City, since he arrived from La Habana in 1980.
Manuel Martinez Olivera was the person responsible for creating the term "Guarapachangueo", as applied to a particular style of Cuban rumba first created in 1975- ‘76.
His wake will be held MONDAY FEBUARY. 1st, at the 'San Francisco/First Avenue Funeral Services, New York, NY 10029-1694 (212) 427-4300, between 115-116 St from 1pm to 10:00pm.
His wake is expected to be extremely well attended, with much singing and drumming by many of us who knew him, played with him, laughed with him, ate with him at the Chino Cubano restaurant on 72nd st, drank with him, smoked with him, helped him and loved him.

Not many people know that José Fajardo "does not play on this LP".
The band on this LP is Orq. Estrellas Cubanas directed by Felix Reyna and was recorded in Cuba.
After violinist Felix Reyna left Fajardos band and formed Orq. Estrellas Cubanas, there were bad feelings between Fajardo and Reyna, Fajardo who was living in the U.S. purposly put this LP out with a photo of himself on the cover, as well as changing the name of track #3, to "Fajardo y Su Flauta"... the original title of the song was "Julio El Distinto", named for 'Julio Guerrero' the flute player in Estrellas Cubanas, it is Julio Guerrero who is playing flute on this LP.
Fajardo intentionally took the original recording and put this LP out with with a completely different cover, a photo of himself on the cover sitting in a helicopter with the intention of pissing off Felix Reyna and it did piss him off.
Cuban LP's and recordings which include particular "styles" and "forms" of (playing & singing) "Cuban" music that unfortunately have become, or are on their way to becoming lost art forms. As well as related materiel which may not be "directly" from Cuba.
Mostly LP's that are either long out of print and-or obscure and music from "my own personal collection".
Occasionally some Brasilian things will be added that are hard to find, even on the other great Brasilian blogs, many that are listed in my Blog links. And maybe some things that have nothing to do with Cuban or Brasilian music.
It takes time to do all this, scanning the covers, resizing and uploading, often changing & correcting the info.
