This is a Tumbadora that was hand made by Raul Rodriguez (Arsenio Rodriguez's brother). The drum was made from a wine barrel, it is very light, but I don't know what the type of wood is. Made in the 1960's.
This drum is owned by N.Y.C. master drummer 'John Amira', who took these photos of it for me.

Thanks for this great post. I'm planning to build a drum from a wine barrel myself in the near future.
Out here in California we have lots of wineries. Our barrels are made from Oak. The vitners tend to prefer this wood.
