Kevin Nathaniel plays Morty Sanders Shekeré

Barry Cox sent me this link to a video
posted on Youtube by Martin Cohen.
It's a video of percussionist 'Kevin Nathaniel' playing a
Chekeré
that my father made for him over 20 years ago.

It's somewhat beat up... net torn, missing beads
and looks like the top of the neck is cracked, but
it still sounds great.

  1. Maaan!
Mark your father is awesome. He chose a great gourd and with that choice came a blessing of years of play. I can see Nat is one with it by now. I can also see many more years of play with a new net and rubber silicone on the inside up to the neck. I'd want to hold on to that shekere a lot longer.

  2. I remember people used to bring their Chekere's/Shekere's to my dad for repairs... many were broken like an egg! Some in "dozens" of pieces... he had his certain way of repairing them... so that after the repair.... you would look at the instrument.. and "never" know it had been busted and cracked in some cases in dozens of pieces. LoL!

My dad made a Shekere for Martin Cohen over 20 years ago.... I don't know if it's true, but someone told me that it sits in a glass case in Martin Cohen's office or house.

Even with the beads missing and the net torn... Kevin Nathaniel plays the crap out of it! He's a great player, I've never met him.
Hear the "tone" on it.... those of you that own one my dad made for you... you know the deal. Word. ;)
