This is great. The thing about these old recordings, and the way people played back then, is that it has so much 'newness' to it.. really sounded like they were making discoveries as they went along, not just playing licks. Real music. Thanks for this unexpected departure.
Yes, these were great times for the music. In the photo of the musicians...the guy on the right in the back without the hat, holding the snare drum at his side, was my next door neighbor when I lived in New Orleans, he was in his 80's back then. I'm sure he's not alive by now.
Matt, thanks for turning me on to this, I have every CD of theirs, except the one they did with Azuquita which I don't like. But I never heard this recording as it obviously was only available from them. Sounds, awesome, this band has the gritty, dirty, "non tourist factor" that always "floats my boat".

Must have been great having contact with a musician of that generation. It's being in company like that, makes you hear the music better.
