"Iba ayé ba yé t'orún maestro"
1. "Chants for Babalú ayé"8. "Rumba for Elegguá"
"Puntilla" had not been in good health over the last several years, he died Tuesday here in New York City at Montefiore hospital after undergoing heart surgery.
Mark, how can I get a copy of this? I have been looking for De La Habana a NY for quite some time
ReplyDeleteUfffff!! that quinto on "Rumba for Eleguá" is…
ReplyDeleteStrange they called that guaguancó that way, cos' this tune has got a name; Mi Arere.
At the end the chants are for Ogún, and "Arere" is Ogún…
Did u listen to the one I posted on echuaye, that Puntilla sung in Havana juanuary 2004… just the same!
On the cover there are a few strange things too:
-El Tao's family name is Martínez and not González (?!)
-He is credited as the author of the "Rumba for Eleguá" (or "Mi Arere")
-Is that El Tao with iyá drum on back pics? or a young Flaco?
-Is el Tao really playing there??
Thanks once more, for this one kicks many asses!
Hi Patricio, yes I heard the one you posted on echuaye.blogspot.com, very nice.
ReplyDeleteThe "Ufffff!!" quinto on "Rumba for Eleguá" was Daniel Ponce, some people can't stand his playing and some say he often plays out of Clave.
I have always really liked his style. He has a unique, individual and physically powerful style of playing which can intimidate some people.
Yes, that's a young Flaco Hernandez in the photo playing Bata..
Not sure about El Tao's last name, that video I posted was shot by Berta Jottar who is friendly with that "crew", she would know all the correct names. (http://hemi.nyu.edu/cuadern/CUADERNO_Version0203.03/index.html)
You are welcome here always. I appreciate all the great work on your web blog. (echuaye.blogspot.com)
Best regards,
